Karen New Year

Image
On January 1, 1938, Karen New Year was observed for the first time. This is the biggest celebration that the Karen people, both nationally and locally throughout the world where they reside, hold once a year. The group leader blows the buffalo horn to summon the Karen New when the Karen people awaken early on the day of the celebration. For the Karen people, this is a special day, and they begin dressing in brand-new traditional Karen attire. Everyone appears radiant and joyful as they reunite with friends and family they haven't seen in a while.  The national anthem was played to begin the ceremony, after which the Leader gave a brief overview of Karen history and the Karen New Year. The youth group begins the traditional dance once the leader gives a brief overview of the group's history. There are several kinds of dance, including modern dance, don dance , and bamboo dance . A fashion show is part of the performance, where young Karen people dress in traditional attire an...

Karen History and Culture

Karen History and Culture   Taken by: Julio Etchart Background of Karen people The Karen originated in Myanmar, which was once known as Burma. Having lived in Burma for more than two millennia, the Karen ethnic group was among the first people to settle in the area.  Why are Karen people moving out from Myanmar (Burma)? According to the Karen Organization of Minnesota ( KOM ), The Karen people had hoped to flee the Burmese government's oppressive rule when British colonists arrived in Burma. When the Karen fought alongside the British allies and the Burmese sided with the Japanese during World War II, tensions between the two groups reached a breaking point. After Burma gained independence from the British in 1948, the Burmese once again became the majority ethnic group, and the Karen people were denied the right to their own land. The Burmese army launched the "Four Cuts" campaign against the Karen in the 1960s. The Karen guerrilla movement was destroyed, and entire com...

Karen Traditional Clothes

Karen Traditional Clothes Women Set Scarf Taken By Mandy Say What material do you suppose Karen's exquisite clothing is made of? The Karen ethnic group in Burma is known for its distinctive traditional clothing, which is produced by the Karen hill tribe. The war has forced many Karen people from Burma. Despite not having their own nation, they continue to practice their exquisite traditional dance, language, and attire. I will make an effort to preserve my culture as a young Karen woman. I am really interested in weaving because I was raised as a refugee in Thailand and never had the opportunity to learn. Though the years passed quickly and I relocated to the US, I will always remember how my people and Karen dressed in traditional garb. And I never imagined that I would run Karen Traditional Clothes, a small business. I made a social media account and gave it the name Mandy Karen Clothes . I made the decision to start ordering Karen clothes from Thailand after I graduated from com...

The Beauty of Old Mission Dam

Image
The Beauty of Old Mission Dam 02/16/2024 (Taken by Mandy Say) The aqueduct and dam buildings were constructed by Native American converts from the Kumeyaay Nation who were part of the mission. Following the drought in 1803, the mission community began building on the dam, and by 1817, the broader irrigation system was finished. Northeast of the city of San Diego lies the urban park known as Mission Trails Regional Park, which includes the Old Mission Dam . In addition to offering hiking and biking paths, a day-use campground, and Lake Murray Reservoir, the park protects the natural terrain. In addition to information about the natural and human histories of the area, the park visitor center has restrooms and a picnic area near the dam. A short drive from the dam is the publically accessible, historic San Diego de Alcala Mission, a minor basilica and functioning parish. Daily hours for the Old Mission Dam parking lot are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A peaceful and beautiful hike would be per...
